  • PokerStars had been in talks with Wynn Resorts to join forces, while Full Tilt Poker had been negotiating their own online-land-based poker partnership with Fertitta Interactive (owners of Station Casinos). Should this have happened, 2 mega-companies would have emerged, even further distancing themselves from any other industry competition.

In the early 2000s, online poker became the hottest thing on the internet. Sites like Paradise Poker and Planet Poker led the way, but it was Party Poker and PokerStars that really blew the doors right off and made the game a household name.

Many factors came together all at once to make this sport a global phenomenon; many will point to the hole-card camera and The Moneymaker Effect as the two real tipping points.

However, as important as these were, the fact that amateur players could face off against the best in the world made poker unique. Imagine walking onto a golf course and playing against Tiger Woods in a PGA event.

Impossible. In poker, your money is just as good as that of the pros, so it is a true equalizing sport; anyone can sit down and put their cash up against the best in the world.

A few poker pros started wearing the logos of online sites – Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke being the most prominent. In early 2003, a day trader by the name of Ray Bitar decided that there was still room for more competition in the space (there was), and he started putting together the plans for a site with poker professional Chris Ferguson, the 2000 World Series of Poker Champion.

The key to this site would be how it differentiated from the others.

Soon after, on April 15, 2011, the Department of Justice seized the domains of PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker and indicted the owners, charging them with mail and bank fraud. This sent the whole industry into a panic; players found themselves blocked from accessing the sites that housed hundreds of millions of dollars of their funds, with no.

Party Poker already had a global brand and market dominance due to its early entry into the space. PokerStars had Chris Moneymaker and the angle that any amateur could play on their site and become the next World Champion.

The two decided that their angle would be to use Ferguson's contacts in the poker world to not only drum up investment, but also to create the face of the site.

In short order, a series of founders were in place, allegedly including an array of the who's who of poker: Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey, Andy Bloch, Jennifer Harmon, and John Juanda to name only a few.

With this crew of well-known players and a new TV audience that was seeing them on their screens with regularity, Full Tilt Poker was launched in early 2004.

The launch was by no means soft; the company spent a significant amount of money plastering TV poker programs with their logos and sponsoring a long list of poker players to wear their clothing while in and out of the poker room. This aggression would be a key factor in the future of this business.

Once the closest rival to PokerStars in terms of traffic, Full Tilt, as you used to know it, is no more after the site completed its planned migration to PokerStars on May 17, 2016.

Anyone attempting to open the Full Tilt software on their computer is prompted to download the new Full Tilt software, which when opened, is strikingly similar to the PokerStars client, except with Full Tilt branding.

What
Poker

None of the old Full Tilt poker games are present in the new software, instead players are greeted with the same cash games and tournaments you would find if you opened PokerStars. There is a tab labelled 'Rush,' but this is simply a reskinned version of PokerStars' Zoom Poker.

Another reskinned product is Full Tilt's Jackpot Sit & Go, which are now PokerStars Spin & Go tournaments with Full Tilt branding, but the popular The Deal side game remains with players able to choose between normal stakes and high stakes using StarsCoins to fund the game.

Full Tilt Poker

Regulars at PokerStars may notice a small increase in traffic in their games, while those who are used to playing solely at Full Tilt will notice a huge surge in liquidity as they are now joined with the PokerStars player pool. More good news for Full Tilt players is that with the exception of slightly different fonts and playing cards, the look and feel of the old Full Tilt software has been retained, complete with avatars and several different backgrounds to choose from.

Those of you who only have a Full Tilt account can log into the new software as usual. However, if you have a Full Tilt account that is paired with a PokerStars account, and you attempt to log in with your Full Tilt details, you will be prompted to migrate your Full Tilt account with your existing PokerStars account, which you will then use to log into the software in future as your old Full Tilt account is closed.
